Sir Joseph Noel Paton (1821 - 1901)

The archive consists of sketchbooks, drawings, paper records and some objects from the professional and personal life of Paton, born in Dunfermline and one of Scotland's leading 19th century artists and the Limner to Queen Victoria. The sketches by Sir Joseph range from possible illustrations made as a teenager to very personal works, such as the drawing he made of his son Callum on his deathbed in 1879. His national importance is seen through his sketches for the Windsor Castle commission in 1864. The artworks show the range of historical, topographical and personal interests that drove the artist.
