This portfolio of 83 etchings plus 12 proofs is the Chapman brothers' response to, and reinterpretation of, Goya's famous series of The Disasters of War. It is one of the most potent expressions of printmaking published in the last twenty years and this set is unusual for being white ink on black paper. Some of the plates take specific Goya prints as points of departure, but elsewhere the range of imagery takes in a variety of other references, such as Symbolist writers and artists, and Hollywood movies. The Fitzwilliam aims to represent the best of contemporary British printmaking and these are the first works by the Chapman brothers to enter the collection.
