Robert Breer (born 1926)

mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art

1966

The American artist Robert Breer Working has been at the forefront of experimental animation for over fifty years and he is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in 20th century experimental film. The tremendous richness of the animated film 66 comes about through Breer's unique understanding of and playfulness with motion. Bursts of continuous movement, jerky and irregular rhythms and drawn objects rotating in three dimensions. The effect is that viewers are held literally at the edge of their perception by a continual unfolding of surprises. These works were presented by the Art Fund under the Art Fund International scheme.
