Orbite Rosse was created for the Venice Biennale in 2009. In the work, nocturnal images of cities are superimposed and layered, continuously transforming and altering. Broad ovals dominate both sides of the projection, each containing patterns of light, becoming a type of celestial or terrestrial map. Her use of ‘the city' as a mythical and symbolic image of extreme beauty and horror takes on concepts relating to human philosophies of ‘heaven and hell' and creates a unifying element to our perceptions and knowledge of global cities. The work relates well to the metaphysical aspects of some of the historical works in Walsall and Birminghams Collections such as the paintings, drawings and prints of William Blake, Francesco Goya and Jacob Epstein. Birmingham and Walsall art galleries are working together to build up a collection exploring the metropolis and urban environment under the Art Fund International scheme.
