Elizabeth Fritsch (born 1940)

Ashmolean Museum

2009

This piece was made with the Ashmolean specifically in mind and is the first acquisition of a work by Fritsch for the museum. The Collision of Particle series, with its slightly surreal three-dimensional geometry, is arguably the finest achievement of the artist's career. The Ashmolean wanted to purchase a work by Fritsch through the Art Fund Collect initiative. This initiative helped museums purchase works at Collect 2009, the Craft Council's contemporary craft fair. Although they were not successful under this scheme, the Art Fund encouraged them to reapply through the Small Grants scheme.
