Tibetan

World Museum

2003-2009

This group of twelve works reflects the diversity of responses and styles in contemporary Tibetan art. It includes 8 photographs and 4 works on canvas. In the last decade a new generation of Tibetan painters has emerged challenging the West's need to view Tibet as an unchanging Shangri-la. Many focus on the changing identity of the Tibetan, from religious figure to superhero, or the incorporation of global names and brands into Tibetan culture (Gade), whilst others turn their back on the sacred heritage of Tibetan painting altogether focusing on the Tibetan people and the landscape (Tsewang Tashi). Liverpool has one of the great Tibet collections with works representing the colonial encounters between British India and Tibet in the early 20th century. Liverpool is the first UK museum service to actively collect contemporary Tibetan Art.
