Keith Coventry (born 1958)

Museum of London

2008

This portfolio containing 20 prints takes its title from the two printmaking techniques the artist has used, namely etching and silkscreen. When making the prints, Coventry was keen to have the contrast in surface texture between the labour intensive etchings and the slick silkscreen prints. The portfolio offers a kind of recapitulation of the artist's career, as it re-presents several of the distinct bodies of work which Coventry has produced over the last twenty years. His concerns with Modernism, with political and social issues and with his experience of living in London are all represented within the prints, which were made in an intense burst of activity in 2008. The prints tackle social issues such as housing, immigration, drug use, London in the 1990s, Cool Britannia and the YBA phenomena, as well as the relationship of the present to the past.
