Anne Desmet (born 1964)

School of Art Gallery and Museum

1990-2007

This collection of 11 prints was selected to be representative of Desmet's career and development in print media. Desmet is one of Britain's foremost contemporary wood engravers. In her work she explores themes of architecture and metamorphosis to create a sense of the interweaving of years of history, specifically the multi-layered nature of cities, where ancient ruins co-exist with modern apartments, and where building sites clad in scaffolding imply change and development. These exoskeletons help to describe and disguise the structures beneath, and imply a process of mutation. Desmet often uses a sequential format to imply time, change and chains of thought.
