This work was produced during the period that Pasmore was Head of Fine Art at Newcastle University, where he set up the influential Art Foundation course, establishing Newcastle as a significant centre of art development in Britain. The work is part of the important period in Pasmore's career from 1952 to 1966/7 when he was producing relief works and was constructed from ready-made boards assembled together and painted. The somewhat rough construction shows that this is one of Pasmore's self-assembled reliefs. This relief reflects Pasmore's continuing interest in light and space, previously explored in collage and figurative river scenes.
