Keith Tyson (born 1969)

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery

2008

Tyson is the foremost living artist from Cumbria who won the Turner prize in 2002. Tullie House staged the first significant exhibition of the artist's work in his home county. This work forms part of a major series, titled 'Nature Paintings', which was first shown in the UK at Tullie House. The work's references to science and nature mean that it relates closely to the museum's varied collections. In this painting, Tyson explores how making art can communicate the complex nature of the world. This painting has associations with cosmology, atomic physics, meteorology and topography but defies any single interpretation or categorisation.
