This watercolour of Stonehenge is full of atmosphere and feeling. It is unusual for Goodwin to produce abstract work as most of his painting is figurative. Albert Goodwin is a key figure in the development in the medium of watercolour forming a bridge between historic figures and groups such as Turner, the Pre-Raphaelites and Ruskin. The work has some parallels with Turners later work, and raises the opportunity for the museum to explore abstraction as a movement within the medium of watercolour.
