This print depicts Emiliano Zapata, the hero of the agrarian revolt, leading his followers. Zapata became a legend after his death in a treacherous ambush. This print has become the iconic image in modern Mexican printmaking. Rivera made his name in the 1920s as a muralist employed in the service of the victorious Mexican revolution. There is no version known in any British collection, where modern Mexican art is barely represented. The museum intends to include this work in an exhibition of Mexican printmaking which will be held towards the end of 2009, and then go on tour in the UK.
