Edward Lear (1812 - 1888)

The Collection: Art and Archaeology in Lincolnshire

Four drawings thought to be part of Lear's project to publish a collected edition of Tennyson's poetry with illustrations by him for every poem. Lear started his project in the 1850s and worked on and off until his death. Lincoln is a centre for Tennyson studies as the Tennysons were a great local family and the museum is putting on an exhibition for Tennyson's bicentenary in 2009. The works were bequeathed by Thomas Masson Moore through the Art Fund in memory of his mother, Janet (née Wikeley).
