James II Coronation Cup

This cup carries an inscription commemorating the Coronation of James II on 23rd April 1685. It was made from the silver of the stave mounts and bells which supported and adorned the coronation canopies held over the King and Queen. The cup is also decorated with 'Chinoiserie' figures supporting a canopy, a style fashionable in the 1680s. The Coronation was fully documented by the contemporary Leicester herald, Francis Sandford and his account is held at the National Art Library in the V&A. The account is illustrated with engravings of the Coronation procession which shows the canopies held over the King and Queen.
