Mary Olive Edis (1876 - 1955)

Cromer Museum

circa 1905-1955

A collection of 112 photographs, 36 autochromes and 923 negatives. The subjects include a famous and important series of portraits of Cromer and Sheringham fishermen, of which two are very rare autochromes. The images are remarkable as high quality portraits which sensitively capture the work-worn lines of the fishermen, who were very camera-shy. Edis exhibited photographs of the Sheringham fishermen in Sheringham in 1951. Many of the descendents of the subjects still live in the area. The collection also includes many studio portraits, unique north Norfolk topographical autochromes, and portraits of local and some more famous people, including King George V, Lloyd George and local lifeboat hero Henry Blogg.
