Gerald Gardiner (1902 - 1959)

Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum

1934-1935

This work was painted at the Gardiner's home in Gloucestershire and is a good example of the artist's depiction of a night-time scene, showing the light, reflections and shadows cast by the gas lamp and fire as his wife reads. Its quiet domestic atmosphere links to the lives and values of the Arts & Crafts Movement for which Cheltenham's collection has Designated Status. Gardiner worked at the Cheltenham School of Art teaching drawing and painting from 1927 until his death.
