Lucien Pissarro (1863 - 1944)

Beaney Museum and Art Gallery

1913

This watercolour of Rye relates to an painting from the same year, acquired for Canterbury with Art Fund help in 2003. Pissarro visited Rye in 1913 with his fellow artist JB Manson, and they each made a series of paintings in and around the town. The Museum has an oil of Rye by Manson from that visit. As in the oil, Lucien's interest includes how he effects the landscape between the viewer and Rye, filling in his pencil drawing with washes and rapid dabs of colour over an assured composition which exhibits his range of graphic skills. It also shows his use of colour in a quite different way to his oil work, which has strong brushwork and light-reflecting paint.
