Description:
Dumfries House is one of the most important Georgian houses in the UK. Dating from the time of the Scottish Enlightenment, it contains an outstanding collection of untouched 18th century furniture selected specifically for the house at the time it was built, including pieces by Thomas Chippendale and his Scottish contemporaries William Matthie, Alexander Peter and Francis Brodie. The campaign to stop the house and contents being auctioned was launched by SAVE Britain's Heritage in March 2007. In May The Art Fund approached SAVE to offer its support. Shortly afterwards The Art Fund announced that it would throw its weight behind the eleventh hour campaign to secure Dumfries House. The house and contents were saved by a consortium and The Great Steward of Scotland's Dumfries House Trust was set up in November 2007 to preserve and maintain Dumfries House and its magnificent contents. The house is expected to open to the public in summer 2008. The Art Fund gave its highest ever grant of £2,500,000 using money set aside from the normal Grants budget.
