Description:
This work depicts the west front of Salisbury Cathedral. It gives a vivid impression of the rich detail on the face of the Cathedral, the west front is shown in sunshine, yet behind the building dark clouds are gathering and there is a rainbow – suggesting unsettled weather. This watercolour is a good example of Turner’s influence on Goodwin, both in terms of style and subject matter. Salisbury Museum has a strong collection of artworks representing the cathedral, including four pictures by Turner.
