Description:
McKnight Kauffer was a member of the Cumberland Market Group which formed after the demised of The Camden Town Group in 1914 to promote Neo-Realism. In this work, the heavy, dark outlines and heightened colour of the simplified landscape forms, especially the blue-greens, directly reference the artist's Camden Town colleagues as well as Cezanne. The artist is perhaps best known for his posters commissioned by the London Underground, Shell, British Petroleum and Eastman and Sons. Southampton City Art Gallery holds one of the finest collections of Camden Town Group and associated works in the country.
