This is a preparatory study for the artist's major painting 'Prince Charles Edward Stuart and the Highlanders entering Edinburgh on the Morning after the Battle of Prestonpans' held in a private collection. Thomas Duncan was born in Perthshire and studied at Perth Academy, he later became a founder member of the Scottish Academy. Duncan's major works are historical paintings like this one which look to episodes from Scottish history for their inspiration.
