John Piper (1903 - 1992)

Jackfield Tile Museum

undated (circa 1951)

Despite the title of this work, the view is actually taken from Coalport looking south over the river to Jackfield. Behind Jackfield Church, the former Craven Dunnill tile works can be seen, in which Ironbridge Gorge Museum's Jackfield Tile Museum is now located. Piper visited the area with John Betjeman when preparing text and copy for 'A Shell Guide to Shropshire' in 1951. This work was purchased with an Art Fund grant and additional support from Robert Holden and the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
