Paper knife

Artist: Michael Bolton (1938 - 2005)

Location: Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

Date: circa 1981

Materials: silver gilt

Gift:

Review number: 6015 (2007)

Provenance:
Collection of Miss Joan Hurst.

Description:
Bolton’s rich Arts and Crafts idiom is well illustrated by this paperknife, with its emphasis on hand-worked detail. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has been building a significant collection of modern and contemporary silver and metalwork since 1997.However, while there is great strength in the pieces from the 1990s onwards, the 1970s and 1980s are less well represented. This gift greatly increases the museum’s representation of post-war silver. Bolton’s paper knife will complement flatware by Sybil Dunlop, Omar Ramsden and Birmingham silversmiths such as Bernard Instone and WT Blackband.
