Terry Atkinson (born 1939)

Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum

1986

This work shows a line of images of Atkinson's daughter Amber, adjusting her sunglasses whilst sitting on the steps of the gibbet at the preserved Natzwiller-Struthof Memorial Concentration Camp. The second series of Goya works explore the Second World War. The idea of the letter is central to the work and the addressee's name is inscribed in the canvas. Atkinson co-founded the pioneering conceptual art group 'Art & Language' at Coventry School of Art in 1968 and is arguably the most significant and influential artist living in Leamington.
