Giovanni di Paolo (1403 - 1482)

Fitzwilliam Museum

1430 - 1460

This charming and previously unrecorded example of Giovanni di Paolo's work dates from the early period of the master's activities. It is a beautiful example of Sienese late Gothic painting and, beyond a few obvious damages and a little rubbing, especially in the mantle, is in very good condition, quite free from repainting. The Saint has dark, chestnut-brown hair, and, over a clear-pink robe, wears a grey-blue mantle with whitish lights, lined with yellowish green. The background is gold and the floor a slatey grey-blue.
