Description:
The Art Commissions Committee awarded McQueen a research grant to respond to the conflict in Iraq in 2003. The ACC is run by the Imperial War Museum and is the current day version of the War Artists Advisory Committee. McQueen proposed that the Royal Mail produce commemorative stamps of individual servicemen and women who had lost their lives in Iraq with the intention that their images should enter the 'lifeblood' of the nation as they are circulated and used. This work is a development of the proposal and comprises sheets of stamps displayed in an exhibition stamp cabinet. Each sheet contains a single design featuring a portrait of a British serviceman or woman who has lost their life in the Iraq conflict, with their name and regiment printed in the margin. The images were chosen and supplied by the families of the deceased. It is a work in progress, one which will continue until Britain's involvement in Iraq ceases and all bereaved families have been invited to collaborate in the project.
