This work is arguably Walton's greatest watercolour and played a key role in establishing his European reputation: in 1890 it was included in the second International Art Exhibition in Munich where the artist won a gold medal. Walton was a member of 'The Glasgow Boys', who popularised working in an almost impressionistic style in their oil paintings and watercolours. He especially drew inspiration from the work of Jules Bastien-Lepage who was renowned for his depictions of peasant figures.
