Grendey seems to have been a provincial immigrant to London who advanced by making middle-class goods for the home market. He specialised in fairly plain, well-made pieces in walnut and mahogany, of which this oval table is a prime example. He is a particularly relevant maker for the Geffrye Museum which focuses on middle-class consumption.
