John Kiki (born 1943)

Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery

1998-2005

The painting was inspired by the classical myth of Nessus and Heracles and depicts the figures from the myth in blocks of flat colour, gestural brushstrokes and paint squeezed directly from the tube. The centaur Nessus is placed prominently in composition just about to carry Heracles' wife Deianeira across the River Euenos. Kiki works as a painter and printmaker and is one of the most important contemporary artists living and working in East Anglia. This is the first work by the artist to be acquired by Norwich. This work was acquired with the support of the Art Fund with the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
