This painting depicts the Old and New House and forms one of a set of eight views of the house and gardens at Chiswick commissioned by 3rd Earl Burlington. It also shows the remains of the formal landscape, before it was swept away, and replaced by a more naturalised style. Rysbrack set a precedent by choosing a variety of panoramic views, revealing the garden in detail and the wide vista showing the activities of the gardeners as well as polite society visiting the estate. Chiswick now has six views from the set, three others were ArtFunded, including the pair to this work, 'View of Chiswick House Gardens from the West'. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
