Not only are these powerful and dramatic compositions, but they also reveal an almost Ruskinian appreciation of the geological structure of the locality. They also provide a 20th-century link with the Welsh mountain compositions produced by the leading watercolourists of the Romantic period who included Wales in their itineraries of 'picturesque' tours around the British Isles.
