Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds, West YorkshireDamien Hirst15 July - 30 October 2011Damien Hirst has a clear early association with Leeds, but surprisingly has yet to show in a major way in the city. This exhibition will offer audiences the opportunity to explore a range of Hirst’s work across his career. In remarkably few pieces, the ARTIST ROOMS holdings trace a trajectory through the artist’s practice. The works reference the inception of Hirst’s ideas as a student and their development in various key manifestations through the 1990s and the early years of the 2000s, when they reached maturity as the artist achieved international prominence. From an early photographic work, to ‘Spot’ and ‘Butterfly’ paintings (Controlled Substances Key Painting (4a) 1994 and Monument to the Living and the Dead 2007), to 'Away from the Flock' 1994 - one of the artist’s ‘Natural History’ works featuring dead animals floating in vitrines - the sharp focus on a relatively small number of works presents key ‘archetypes’ that have defined Hirst’s art. In this way audiences can engage with the seminal ideas behind Hirst’s work such as birth, illness, death and religion. Visit Leeds Art Gallery
