Francesca Woodman comes to Hull

A high profile exhibition of Francesca Woodman's work will be at Hull City Council’s Ferens Art Gallery from Saturday 11 June to Sunday 23 October.

During Woodman’s short career she produced over 800 or so images of which only around 120 have ever been published or exhibited. The Ferens is showing 18 of her photographs which once belonged to her boyfriend and a number include personal messages. Woodman’s career was cut short by her tragic suicide at the age of 22 in 1981. Now on the 30th anniversary of her death her works are receiving huge critical acclaim. Towards the end of the year, a major touring retrospective of her work is being mounted by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which will tour to the Guggenheim in New York.

The ARTIST ROOMS exhibition at the Ferens will be accompanied by a number of contemporary photographs and new media works from Ferens Art Gallery's permanent collection for a linked display curated by the Future Ferens (volunteers aged 18-25 who help to make the gallery more accessible and attractive to young people).

Additional funding from the Art Fund has enabled an engagement project with young people to be developed alongside the ARTIST ROOMS. As part of this they are organising three related activities during the exhibition for young people to explore her work in greater detail. These events are free and will be led by the Future Ferens:

• Who’s in the Frame? Wednesday 27 July, 1 – 3pm
• Vintage Revival: Wednesday 17 August, 1 – 3pm
• Your Last Text Message: Wednesday 31 August, 1 – 3pm
