1 March 2011Diane Arbus in Aberdeen
Bringing together some 70 black and white photographs, the show spans the artist’s career from the mid-1950s until her death in 1971 Some of the photographer’s most celebrated images are included in the exhibition, such as Tattooed man at a carnival, Md. 1970, and Young man and his pregnant wife in Washington Square Park, N.Y.C 1965. Also included are examples of her lesser-known early work in 35mm and a very rare portfolio of original prints, A box of ten photographs, which Arbus produced shortly before her suicide in 1971. This includes perhaps her most iconic image, Identical twins, Roselle, N.J. 1967. In addition to works from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, the exhibition features a small number of additional loans from a private collection, including an early self-portrait taken when Arbus was pregnant with her first child in 1945. Aberdeen Art Gallery’s involvement with ARTIST ROOMS saw the Gallery host the work of Australian sculptor Ron Mueck in 2009. This was one of the city’s most popular exhibitions in recent years attracting 50,000 visitors.
