17 November 2010Alex Katz comes to North Wales
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927, Alex Katz has been painting for over half a century and his highly coloured works are instantly recognizable. With a few brushstrokes and key use of colour he conveys the complex feelings of human nature in his portraits and the changing moods of nature in his landscapes, seascapes, flowers and trees. His family and friends feature heavily in his portraiture - a painting of his son, writer and poet Vincent Katz, is included in the exhibition - while his landscapes are evocations of Maine, where he has gone to paint every summer for 60 years. Green Table consists of 17 portraits painted in oils on both sides of aluminum cutouts, following the subject’s head and shoulder shapes. The silhouettes, arranged on a plain table, inter-relate to each other but also capture its audience. Still painting in his 80s, and more popular than ever, this exhibition provides a rare opportunity for work by Alex Katz to be seen in Wales.
