Alex Katz comes to North Wales

The work of influential contemporary American painter, Alex Katz, will be in North Wales as part of the 2010 national tour of the ARTIST ROOMS collection. The exhibition at Mostyn in Llandudno runs from Saturday 20 November 2010 to Saturday 12 March 2011. 20 paintings spanning his career make up the Alex Katz ROOM in the ARTIST ROOMS collection. Especially for this exhibition, they are accompanied by a freestanding work, Green Table, created by the artist in 1996, and lent by Anthony d’Offay.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927, Alex Katz has been painting for over half a century and his highly coloured works are instantly recognizable. With a few brushstrokes and key use of colour he conveys the complex feelings of human nature in his portraits and the changing moods of nature in his landscapes, seascapes, flowers and trees. His family and friends feature heavily in his portraiture - a painting of his son, writer and poet Vincent Katz, is included in the exhibition - while his landscapes are evocations of Maine, where he has gone to paint every summer for 60 years.

Green Table consists of 17 portraits painted in oils on both sides of aluminum cutouts, following the subject’s head and shoulder shapes. The silhouettes, arranged on a plain table, inter-relate to each other but also capture its audience.

Still painting in his 80s, and more popular than ever, this exhibition provides a rare opportunity for work by Alex Katz to be seen in Wales.
