ARTIST ROOMS open across the UK

A raft of new shows at museums and art galleries all around the UK will open this autumn as part of ARTIST ROOMS on tour with the Art Fund.

Outer Hebrides
From 30 August, An Lanntair on the Isle of Lewis will host a selection of works by influential Scottish artist, Ian Hamilton Finlay, including appropriately, given the island setting, his striking Sailing Dinghy.

Scottish Highlands
Following the recent gift by US President Barak Obama to David Cameron of a print by American Pop Artist Ed Ruscha, one of the highlights of the autumn shows is the tour of his work to three venues in the Scottish Highlands. Since the 1960s, Ruscha has drawn on advertising slogans and pithy phrases to explore American popular culture. Opening at the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery on 18 September and running until 20 November, the work will also be shown at the Swanson Gallery in Thurso from 15 Jan to 26 Feb 2011 and at Timespan at Helmsdale from 5 March until 16 April 2011.

Northern Ireland
The £100,000 Art Fund Prize winning Ulster Museum in Belfast will be showing the work of Richard Long from 24 September 2010 to 27 Feburary 2011. Long has been a major figure in international and British art since the late 1960s. This exhibition explores the artist’s ongoing concern with landscape and the natural environment.

South Coast
In Sussex, the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne will host the work of controversial American artist and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The exhibition shown between 25 September and 21 November 2011 will explore the ways in which Mapplethorpe pushed the boundaries of photography both in terms of subject matter and technique.

Midlands
Leicester Museums and Galleries holds an internationally renowned collection of German Expressionist Art which will help to contextualise this display of Gerhard Richter’s work at the New Walk Gallery in Leicester from 2 October 2010 to 27 February 2011. As one of the art world’s most respected living artists, Richter has investigated the possibilities and boundaries of painting in a career spanning four decades.

North East England
And finally, BALTIC’s striking industrial space in Gateshead will provide a fitting backdrop to the monumental paintings and installations of German artist Anselm Kiefer which will be on display from 7 October 2010 to 16 January 2011. The exhibition will include major installations such as Palm Sunday, recently shown at Tate Modern, alongside further works by the artist from ARTIST ROOMS not previously seen in the UK.
