Paintings 16th-19th C

Dulwich Picture Gallery, the first purpose-built gallery in England, was designed by Sir John Soane and houses one of the country's finest collections of Old Master paintings. Most of the collection was put together between 1790 and 1795 and concentrates on the period 1600 - 1750, a time of astonishing artistic individualism and experimentation. The Latins (Italians, Spanish and French) and the Northern Europeans (Flemish, Dutch and British) are hung in separate areas, allowing for a contrast between these European polarities.
